Johann Gottfried Galle (June 9, 1812 – July 10, 1910) was a German astronomer at the Berlin Observatory.
He is best known for his discovery of the planet Neptune in 1846, based on calculations made by French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier.
Early Career
Johann Gottfried Galle began his career as an assistant to Johann Franz Encke at the Berlin Observatory in 1835.
During this time, he focused on studying comets and made his own discoveries. In fact, he identified three comets within a short period from December 2, 1839, to March 6, 1840.
Discovery of Neptune
Galle's most significant contribution to astronomy came on September 23
